Mushak Pacha | Nuevos Tiempos | New Times

Contemporary paintings by brothers Inty and Yauri Muenala reflecting the traditional culture of the Kichwa of the Ecuadorian Andes.
The show ran from November 2010 to February 2011

Two brothers:

Inty Muenala and Yauri Muenala, contemporary indigenous artists devoted to preserving and sharing the cosmology of the Andean Kichwa culture–a culture filled with life and millenarian tradition–through art and its different manifestations.

The earthy textures, Andean symbols, millenarian (hi)stories and the experience of a globalized world combine in a single proposal where identity matters most: the identity of that which is different; the identity of that which is natural; the identity of a nation; the Kichwa nation; the identity of a symbol; self-identity; how to be human, with a present history and a transgressive future. The opening reception on November 5th was a benefit dinner party with live Latin music, authentic food, an art show and more! The closing reception showcased a dance performance by Lisbet Conejo of Ecuador.

A word from the curator, Tony Basanta:

Hi everyone,

My name is Tony Basanta. I’m a Cuban DJ who have settled down in Vermont since November 2006 and have been spinning music thru different radio stations like WRUV 90.1 FM (UVM), and other AM Stations in Colchester and Your Voice in the Valley in Warren. Since Feb 2009, I have become part of WOMM-LP 105.9 FM THE RADIATOR in Burlington with my SABROSO GUARAPO radio show

Thurs 6 – 9:30 am, www.theradiator.org
And @ WWPV 88.7 FM The Mike at Saint Michaels’ College
Thurs 12 noon – 2 pm, www.wwpv.org

Our dear friend Bren Alvarez has given me a great opportunity to celebrate Our Cuban Culture and its legacy in the Music and Arts in the United States of America since the XIXth century. So every FIRST FRIDAY of JULY and AUGUST we will be speaking about CUBAN MUSIC. TODO CUBANO y sus Mezclas (And its mixes) has to do with the marriage of many ancestral Cuban Rhythms and American Jazz, later Rock N’ Roll, The Santana Thing and beyond. So it will be a pleaure to meet you all, please pass the voice and feel welcomed.

I have a double pleasure and it will be to share these Friendly Conversations and Sounds with Photographer David Garten, – a man whose passion for my country, CUBA is being widely expressed in his Photo Vintage since long ago.

Enclosed TWO of Mr Garten’s masterpieces, he caught TWO of our most significant musicians: Grammy Winner Artist Chucho Valdes – founder of the legendary IRAKERE in 1972, – who recently received a Doctorate at Berklee College of Music (May 5th, 2011) and LAZARO ROSS (rip) the finest AKPWON = PREACHER of our heritage with Mother Africa, Awarded with international recoginitions due to his ellaborated recordings with Sintesis, Irakere, El Conjunto Folklorico Nacional and his own Ensemble.

For those who have been enjoying our radio shows, we’re also excited to announce that TODO CUBANO y sus Mezclas at FLYNN DOG July-August are only going to be better. We think you are gonna dig it. One thing is for sure – we’ll try and always work overtime, there will be lots of surprises and excitement.

Thank you very, very much,
Tony Basanta
